Translating video game player ratings into college football analytics

In the NFL, the release of Madden player ratings has become an annual tradition for commentators, players and fans. As the official gaming partner of the college football playoff, PlayStation wanted to create a similar conversation within college football with their brand at the center.
To do this, we worked with ESPN to develop a revolutionary new analytics model to objectively measure each player’s impact on the game. For every FBS collegiate football player, we measure their teams success with them on the field and off the field (factoring in playbook styles, opponent, and other variables). We then compare this impact to other players at same position. The result is a 0-100 score, just like video game player ratings.
We then integrated this impact rating into ESPN’s full portfolio of college football coverage to naturally inject PlayStation into the college football conversation in a way that gives fans deeper insight into their favorite players.
